CHAPTER 1 - EARLY DAYS
people. I find people fascinating. Everyone is different, presenting a challenge of their own.
I myself didn’t achieve the individual sporting heights of some of my siblings. I took a slightly different tack. I tried to take a leadership role rather than an individual one. My goal was to be captain of the team and then try to make sure the team was as successful as possible.
To achieve success, I devoted hours to assessing and developing the team, analysing opponents and working out tactics. I learnt a lot in this period which stood me in good stead in business.
Whilst I kept wicket for most of my cricketing career, I have achieved a hat trick with the cricket ball on two occasions and those balls have lived on my desk for many years. When it comes to batting, I always like to open the innings. I also have a reputation for being the hardest person to get out and I can bat for hours if necessary. That not only applies to cricket! Another sporting achievement of mine has been golf. However, my opponents have never understood why my ball always ended up on a tee. I have once achieved a hole -in-one.
The biggest sporting events in the Daly family have always been the Sunday afternoon sports events. Family, friends, neighbours, business associates, overseas visitors have all participated in table tennis, tennis, touch rugby, cricket and other games in the Daly house or back garden. This is a tradition I kept going when we came to Australia and every generation of our family has been part of it. Every game has always been hotly contested and on many occasions people have not agreed with my line calls or umpires decision. That’s when my motto works “be reasonable do it my way”.
The insurance influence in our family was so great that it was never going to be any other career route for me. Peter Junior has followed me and has also built a very successful insurance career. My daughter Debbie was also in insurance until she met her husband
