CHAPTER 1 - EARLY DAYS
was driving to the cricket with some of my cricket pals. As usual we were late and I was in a hurry so I beat a stop sign (in other words I didn’t stop) but unfortunately I nearly collided with a cop on his motorbike. He swerved and went straight into the hedge, which we all thought was quite funny at the time.
He was so annoyed that our smiles disappeared rather quickly when he gave me a fine for not stopping and a citation for negligent driving. He then asked me to produce my licence, so I told him I had left it at home and gave my brother’s name and address.
You can imagine what happened. My brother Don was not over- enamoured with having to go to the police station to show his licence. Anyway, I then had to co-ordinate some of my insurance broker friends who knew the top cop in order to get rid of the negligent driving charge and I got away with a warning or should I say Don got away with a warning.
Back to my career:- Eagle Star decided that they would put me in the accounts department, so I would at least learn something about accounting before I started my insurance exams. They were also very good to me as the General Manager decided I should go back to school in order to get my HSC. They paid for me to attend a college twice a week and I also attended two or three times a week in the evening.
My main function in the accounts department was placing the revenue stamps on all policies and keeping a stamp book, which I could never reconcile. One of the accounting staff took an interest in me, so he ended up reconciling the stamp book for me each month.
I decided accounting was not going to be my career! Shortly after that, in 1954, I joined a company called British Traders.
