CHAPTER 1 - EARLY DAYS
a bit of a dry affair as we did not drink, although the guests did. The bridesmaids” dresses were blue and one of Daphne’s cousins painted his car blue to match.
We had a Hillman car on which the tyres were bald, so we swapped the wheels over with the Marine Manager’s car, which was also a Hillman and headed off for our wedding night to the Royal Hotel in Kroonstad. At about 11 pm we were about an hour from the hotel when we were flagged down by a family standing next to their car on the side of the road. They had run out of petrol. No one had a siphon hose so they undid the nut at the bottom of our petrol tank and filled up some pots and pans and then went on their way.
Of course, we got to 10km from Kroonstad and we ourselves ran out of petrol. Fortunately, the other people came back to look for us. We eventually arrived at the hotel at some ungodly hour and checked into our room to find there was only a common bathroom and toilet down the hall. Daphne wasn’t impressed.
On our third day on honeymoon we went to Simonstown and spent the day on the beach. I got so sunburnt that I could do nothing for days. That was the last time I ever went sunbathing.
Legal and General Group plc (L&G)
As Daphne and I were getting married I thought it better to change companies. I was approached by a recruiting firm who were looking for a bright
fellow to join Legal and General (L&G) which was the start of my 36 years of employment with the L&G Group in Southern Africa and including a stint in the UK.
