Chapter 25 - Honours and Awards

I was extremely pleased to be awarded the Order of Australia for services to the insurance industry and to the community, particularly through the advancement of alternative dispute resolution and consumer protection. However, I do realise I could not have achieved this accolade without the support of all those involved, many of whom are mentioned within my story. I recognise the importance I have placed during my business career on the integrity, assistance and experience of those who have surrounded me and provided advice and initiatives in regard to the setting up of the Financial Ombudsman Scheme, providing an outstanding service to the industry’s consumers.
Subsequently in 2017, I was awarded the 2017 Life Membership of the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Insurance and Finance (ANZIIF) and in accepting the offer, I spoke about two major issues which are of importance, these being:
• The advancement of women in insurance where I related to my attendance in 1981 at the 99th Annual Dinner of the Victorian Institute where on the back they recorded the names of the Presidents and there was not one single woman amongst them. Following the Annual Dinner, I spoke to my Personal Assistant, Tricia Kelly and suggested she should correct the situation and strived to become the first woman President.
Following her appointment to the Institute Board, she achieved this honour in 1990 and became the 109th President. However, the point I was making is that it’s important we all strive to promote women in insurance, given that by far the majority in the industry
