CHAPTER 6 - MY FIRST TRIP TO THE UK – (ENGLISH VERSION OF DISCRIMINATION)
It was explained that only full Managers were allowed wall-to-wall carpet, Assistant Managers carpets had to end a foot away from the wall and Superintendents were only allowed a rug!
Shortly after being there, I was summoned to Harold Robson’s office and he asked me whether I would like to go to see a show. I was very excited about that and suggested we should go and see a crude show because in South Africa we never saw any crude shows as censorship was very strict. He was somewhat flabbergasted but said there was a show on at the Windmill Theatre and it was called “Let’s Get Laid”.
I must admit I was highly amused when we arrived at the show, him with his umbrella knocking on the window “do you have tickets for Mr Robson”.
The person gave him his tickets which were in the front row. As I mentioned before, Harold Robson was over 6 feet tall and when the show started (and they probably did it on every occasion) the comedian who was in this big bed with a few scantily clad ladies, gets up and turns up the house lights and looks straight at Robson and says “what did you pay for your ticket”. He was absolutely speechless. Anyway, this commenced a long relationship I had with him and it was very beneficial to me when I eventually returned to South Africa.
One day I was invited to dine with the Managing Director and General Management Team. There were three dining areas at L&G. There was one for all general staff, then you had the Superintendents’ dining room and another one for the Managers. I was invited to the MD & GMs” dining room which was served by a waiter in black tie. It was extremely quiet and you all sat around about four tables. Prior to sitting down you could have an alcoholic drink. At the conclusion of the luncheon, you were then invited to have some Roses Lime Juice to take away the smell of the alcohol and you were offered Temple Bar cigarettes and cigars. Diners were expected to return to their offices at 2.00pm.
