CHAPTER 6 - MY FIRST TRIP TO THE UK – (ENGLISH VERSION OF DISCRIMINATION)
because back in South Africa we didn’t yet have TV at all.
On one of the Sundays I was there, I watched the Trooping of the Colours. I thought it was quite amazing. Anyway, every time I turned on the TV after that it was snowing. So, I went down to the Manager of the apartment and I told him that there was something wrong with the TV. He said he would get the repairman in and have a look at it. The next day I came home and it was still snowing but as I went past him he said how’s the TV going? I said well it still snowing and he was bewildered. He said he had spent some time up there watching the TV and everything was working smoothly.
The same thing happened the next day and then the Manager asked me when did I turn it on? I said I turned it on when I got home at 1.00 in the morning. He said “oh no at 12.00 o’clock they play God Save the Queen and that’s the end of TV for that day”. On another occasion, over the weekend, he asked me what newspaper I would like. I said well you better send me the lot and then I will choose a newspaper from thereon. Little did I know that there were so many papers produced over the weekend, so I ended up with a two foot pile of newspapers outside my door.
They also gave me a car to use which was a big black Wolseley. The only problem was I could never find anywhere to park it so in the end I gave it back. I learnt that all the inspectors were given a company car on condition that they never drove it into London for work other than once a year when the car was inspected.
