CHAPTER 9 - MOM THE FAMILY MATRIARCH
Don was batting and he was in the 90s so Pop decided he should bowl (he was the Captain) and he bowled wide of the stumps so Don could make his hundred. This meant Don got a new cricket bat.
Back to Mum; she was always the arbitrator and negotiator. When it came to Pop and at times when Pop just couldn’t take some of the arguments, Mum would step in and would probably risk the consequences of becoming involved. The important issue in talking about Mum, everybody loved her and she was held in high esteem.
I can remember when she came to visit in Australia and she wasn’t feeling all that well and she was sent for tests and then found out that she was suffering from cancer. They told her she had 18 months to live and I remember picking her up and she said to me, I was not to tell anyone. During this 18 months period, she attended Debbie’s wedding to Paul Shannon and during the wedding celebration she again got seriously ill and had to be accommodated in one of the bedrooms at the place where we were holding the reception.
