CHAPTER 9 - MOM THE FAMILY MATRIARCH
Pop was devastated and he literally tried everything but all the cures that were made available did nothing. He did not want her to go through an operation, because they maintained that the success of recovery was very low indeed and she might just die when having the operation.
In her last days, we all returned to Johannesburg and sat with her for long periods while she went through the process and it was good to see that everyone was there when she passed away. Even when she was dying, she said she would be extremely upset if we all were saddened and did not have a jolly good party to celebrate her life. By the way, we certainly did have a rip-roaring function.
In a lighter vein mum and dad were very fortunate to have celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary on the 30th July 1980 prior to my family’s departure to Australia on the 18th October 1980. Below is a photograph taken at the 50th Anniversary together with a photo of Mum and Dad on their first visit to Australia the following year.
