Chapter 10 - Grandchildren and Great-Granddaughters and my Sporting Philosophy
My most enjoyable time is spending quality time with my seven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. I am indeed most fortunate to be part of their lives, sharing with them their thoughts, enjoyments and their many activities whether it be sport, the arts or something unusual which they wish to indulge like paintball shooting which I quite frankly found quite unusual, but two of my granddaughters see this as a great sport.
Being part of their activities has been most important for me, particularly being treated as one of their friends who they can confide in and discuss matters of mutual interest. I sometimes pity other grandparents who take their grandchildren out for dinner or lunch or to entertainment and they are ignored while the grandchildren play on their mobiles or iPads.
In my case, this never seems to happen although on one occasion when I was entertaining one of my grandsons and a friend of his, they did find dinner rather boring. Thereafter what we agreed was have at least three subjects on which we could converse over dinner. This worked extremely well on the first occasion and then on the second occasion there was no more need for an agenda or topics.
Having pre- arranged topics for discussions was one of my innovations when I used to entertain business people, politicians or indeed anyone at all at boardroom lunches. I used to have the three topics listed on a round piece of paper which became the place mats.
It has only been in recent times, that I have been beaten by the grandchildren in sport as I generally are able to hold my own. So I always challenged them. I did find that as I got older I had to do some cheating, particularly when it came to line calls etc. There is no-one better than Papa , as they call me, when it comes to having the best
