CHAPTER 10 - GRANDCHILDREN AND GREAT - GRANDDAUGHTERS AND MY SPORTING PHILOSOPHY
eyesight and that was even before I had my cataracts removed.
Today I have had to change my sports to keep winning, so I am concentrating on such things as billiards/snooker and then the odd game of ten pin bowling. I did on one occasion decide to electrify my bicycle. You can just imagine when we were visiting my favourite spot Spinnaker (our apartment on the Gold Coast) and all the kids were ready to beat me to the Spit which is about a 10km ride. I arrived with my new bike and only the youngest asked me what was that on my frame. I told her it was only a type of water bottle. Anyway, I bet them $20 and I cleaned them up, but you never heard so many complaints when the others found out the bike was electrified.
Perhaps at this point I should expand on my interests when it comes to sport and the arts. I not only have interests in ballet, ballroom dancing, opera, horse racing, Australian Rules Football, tennis, rugby, cricket, hockey and because of the interest amongst the grandchildren, soccer (a sport that I thought all you can see is the grass growing). On top of that, I did appear on a couple of golf courses and played tennis but I always made sure I had an excellent partner. The point I am making is that I am an unusual grandfather as I personally attend sporting events or ballet or dancing in preference to sitting at home watching it on TV. The main reason I give everybody is that when you are present at the game, like Australian Rules Football rugby, cricket or soccer, you can visualise where the ball is going to go and what you would do if you were playing the game.
Some would say that at a sporting event, I am completely relaxed. What I am relaxed from is anything that is happening outside of the game because I am immersed in what is going on on the field. Nothing gives me more delight than watching the grandchildren play and even if I don’t know anything about it, I still set myself up as an expert. What I look for and expect from my grandchildren is for them to be physically fit and to have the stamina to see they are meeting the expectations of not only the coach but themselves.
