BRUMBY GOVERNMENT TO LEAD
NATION ON BOOSTING REGIONAL INVESTMENT Media Release – Wednesday, 30 July 2008
The Brumby Government will lead the development of a regional infrastructure model that will use better co-operation between state and federal agencies to boost the economic and social benefits from major infrastructure projects funded by the State and Federal Government, such as the Commonwealth's $20 billion Building Australia Fund.
Regional and Rural Development Minister Jacinta Allan said the Brumby Government would use its own model for funding regional development as the basis for developing a national template aimed at extracting new investment opportunities from the proposed $20 billion new infrastructure fund.
Speaking at the Regional Development Council in Western Australia today, Minister Allan said tackling significant changes in regional areas was a priority for all levels of government.
“There is a real opportunity to deliver short-term construction jobs and longer term employment as part of the Federal Government’s expected major infrastructure projects in regional Australia,” Ms Allan said ... "In Victoria, we are already creating new regional development opportunities from existing major infrastructure projects ..."
“The Brumby Government already has a well established fund, the Regional Infrastructure Development Fund and statutory body, Regional Development Victoria with a proven track record in promoting and supporting economic and community development in Victoria.
“Through this fund, the Brumby Government has invested $412.8 million in 197 major capital works projects throughout regional and rural Victoria."
BUSINESS LEADERSHIP KEY
TO GROWING OUR COMMUNITIES
Media Release – Friday, 01 August 2008
A combination of strong business leadership and innovative government policy are the key to securing the growth of regional economies, Regional and Rural Development Minister Jacinta Allan said today ... at the VECCI Regional Business Leaders’ Luncheon in Bendigo.
“Government and business need to work together to support the significant growth occurring in regional and rural Victoria.
“When the Victorian Labor Government came to office, we took action to turn regional Victoria into the best place to live, work, invest and raise a family. Since 1999, our Government has supported more than 470 new investments worth $9.36 billion that have contributed to the creation of more than 136,700 new jobs in regional Victoria" and “... regional Victoria’s population has grown by more than 92,000 people.“
... In consultation with business, local councils and communities, Ms Allan said the Brumby Government was taking action on regional planning, skills shortages, climate change and drought through the renewed Moving Forward package.
“With these strategies in place, plus the input and ideas of the regional business community through VECCI’s new Regional Business Convention, we will create stronger, more sustainable communities in the long-term,” Ms Allan said.
The Brumby Government is providing $55,000 to VECCI to host its inaugural Regional Business Convention in Bendigo later this year.
