Executive Vice President Getting it together – A Spring Retreat
Steven J. Willard, LS Finally, after a couple years of going around and around on the
Vice President
Scott A. Gillis, LS, Treasurer CRAZY TRAIN, we seem to be creeping towards returning to some
Scott B. Allen, LS, Secretary sort of resemblance of normalcy. It once again seems weird to
Daniel E. Marvin, LS put a mask on, and that is a good kind of weird in my mind. And
Executive Director
our family is starting to redevelop a social life out of our “inner
Board of Trustees circle”, starting to go out to dinner and events without feeling
Robert R. Allen, LS awkward and worrying about the cooties. One of the things I am
J. Steven Boddecker, LS
Patricia P. Brooks, LS looking forward to the most is getting back to Association
Gregory J. de Bruin, LS, PE meetings and events in person. After all, the networking and comradery is a part of why we
John R. Ennis, LS enjoy our time being part of the Regional and State Associations. For me, being in person
R. Ronald Kreiling, LS brings discussions, interactions and communication to a much higher level.
Joseph G. Malinowski, LS
Daren L. Morgan, LS I am seeing the Regionals starting to get together again in person and it looks like we will
Robert A. Smith, LS
Edwin A. Summerhays, LS soon be doing the same at the State level. Coming up this Spring is a BIGGIE EVENT – The
Gary L. Thompson, LS NYSAPLS Strategic Planning Retreat. Fingers and toes crossed that the tide does not turn and we
Glennon J. Watson, LS will finally meet in person this coming May 12-14. After two years of being postponed multiple
Marie T. Welch, LS
times, we are on track to actually pull this Retreat off at the Embassy Suites in Saratoga Springs.
NYSAPLS Headquarters I have to be honest, in my several years working with NYSAPLS, probably the single most
146 Washington Avenue productive event I have witnessed and been a part of was the 2017 Strategic Planning Retreat.
Land Surveyors Building
Albany, NY 12210 It was enjoyable and educational to watch and be a part of what I would describe as a fun and
518-432-4046 engaging idea factory. The premise is to vet the needs and desires for the future of the
www.nysapls.org association through discussions, debates and fun activities that promote creative thinking…

and that is exactly what happens! At the last Retreat, we witnessed our members stirring the
Editor-in-Chief & pot and engaging in lively and thoughtful interactions. Many issues that concern our profession
Managing Director
Amber Carpenter and our association were discussed, and out of that, came tasks and directions for our
amber@nysapls.org committees, our Board members and our officers. Some major ideas and initiatives have spun
Director of Operations out of the Retreat like, the Minimum Technical Standards (MTS), the Public Relations initiative
Heather Schultz and specific directions and tasks for many of our committees.

At this year’s Retreat, some of the major topics and issues that look to be on the agenda are
Administrative Assistant workforce development, member retention and engaging diversity. There will also be
Sharon O'Brien
sharon@nysapls.org discussions about moving forward with Minimum Technical Standards, Regional member
engagement and how NYSAPLS can help strengthen the Regionals. Another topic that will be
discussed is the financial health of the association moving forward.
Affiliated Associations The goal of the Retreat is to bring current leadership, new faces and ideas together from all
