        President and CEO [ president’s message ]
        Jeremy E. Thompson, LS
        Executive Board
        Steven J. Willard, LS
Executive Vice President Greetings Surveying friends:
        Scott A. Gillis, LS
Vice President As spring approaches and brings a renewed vibrance to
Scott B. Allen, LS another year, I am once again reminded of the need for
         Treasurer
William R. Eggers, LS surveyors and the multitude of services that we provide. Not
Secretary that I believe the demand for surveying services ever truly
Daniel E. Marvin, LS ends, but admittedly it does tend to slow a bit during the
         Executive Director
winter, at least in the northern portion of the state where I
        Board of Trustees
Robert R. Allen, LS live. Even though the phone calls and email inquiries tend to
        J. Steven Boddecker, LS slow following the first significant snow each year, they
Patricia P. Brooks, LS seem to spring back with a persistent urgency, in what almost feels like an exponential
Gregory J. de Bruin, LS, PE
John R. Ennis, LS volume, just as soon as the snow fleets. With the majority of my time now being spent
Roy B. Garfinkel, LS teaching surveying at the Ranger School in Wanakena preparing the next generation of
        R. Ronald Kreiling, LS
Joseph G. Malinowski, LS surveying technicians for entry into the profession, admittedly I don’t get to work directly
Daniel E. Marvin, LS in surveying as much as I may like, however that doesn’t slow the inquiries. Even with a
Daren L. Morgan, LS limited schedule and virtually no formal advertising, it seems that each year I get more
        Robert A. Smith, LS
Edwin A. Summerhays, LS requests for survey related work. What I find equally interesting to the volume of
Gary L. Thompson, LS inquiries, is the increased variety of why people are reaching out. Oh sure, the majority
        Glennon J. Watson, LS
Marie T. Welch, LS of the calls are still regarding “normal” surveying things such as boundary disputes,
missing monuments, real estate transactions, and subdivisions, but over the past year, I
        NYSAPLS Headquarters
146 Washington Avenue had requests for less common services, such as a request to locate, size and type trees
Land Surveyors Building within a specified area; a request to establish an elevation for a sewer permit; a request
        Albany, NY 12210
518-432-4046 to prepare a sketch showing the location of buildings and roads to be used for evacuation
www.nysapls.org and emergency planning purposes for a summer camp; requests to interpret language
info@nysapls.org in a deed; requests to help prepare deeds; and plenty of questions regarding taxes and
Editor-in-Chief & tax maps. While I am not always able to help with every inquiry, some because I am too
        Managing Director
Amber Carpenter busy, and some because I am simply not qualified to do so, it makes me feel honored
amber@nysapls.org that the public has enough trust in me, a professional land surveyor, to ask. I make a
Director of Operations point to respond to every inquiry. If it results in surveying work for me, all the better.
Heather Schultz However, if I can’t help them by surveying for them, my goal is to be able to point them
        heather@nysapls.org
in the direction that will eventually result in help. I take great pride in the relationships

        Sharon O'Brien
sharon@nysapls.org with attorneys, real estate folks, abstractors, and public officials, all of which provide me
Affiliated Associations with a large network to consult with, and to be able to direct the public to when I am
Allegheny Plateau Association of Professional unable to help. In my opinion, equally as important for surveyors being revered as the
