NYSAPLS, Inc.
President and CEO
Daniel E. Marvin, LS [ president’s message ]
Executive Board
Kenneth M. Slaugenhoupt, LS This president’s message comes with mixed emotions. It was
Executive Vice President
Roy B. Garfinkel, LS two years ago this coming January that I stood in the Oneida
Vice President Room at the Turning Stone resort and took the oath of office as
Jeremy E. Thompson, LS, Treasurer President of the New York State Association of Professional Land
Steven J. Willard, LS, Secretary
Gregory J. de Bruin, LS, PE Surveyors, and now I am writing my last president’s message. I
Executive Director am feeling jealous of those presidents of the association that have
served before me and were able to attend meetings in person and
Board of Trustees
Robert R. Allen, LS out of state conferences, but this is the time that I have served. I
J. Steven Boddecker, LS am hopeful this will not be the case for the incoming president of NYSAPLS. Also,
Patricia P. Brooks, LS
Robert G. Cross, LS every time Amber sends me a reminder that my message is due, I get a little nervous
Gregory J. de Bruin, LS, PE as I usually do not know what to write. But this time is a little different or so I think.
John R. Ennis, LS Two years ago, I did not make a lot of promises of what I was going to accomplish
R. Ronald Kreiling, LS
Joseph G. Malinowski, LS in my term. In fact, I thank the people that had inspired me and helped me to get to
Daren L. Morgan, LS this point. Being on the Executive Board is a huge commitment, but it has been very
Robert A. Smith, LS rewarding, and it has been a great journey.
Edwin A. Summerhays, LS
Gary L. Thompson, LS As I said in my last message, rest assured that everyone at NYSAPLS is looking ahead
Glennon J. Watson, LS
Marie T. Welch, LS while continuing to evaluate what are the best next steps for the organization in
order to be flexible with planning for the Annual Conference. And unfortunately, the
NYSAPLS Headquarters strategic planning retreat at the Embassy Suites in Saratoga Springs, in September,
146 Washington Avenue
Land Surveyors Building had to be cancelled. The good news is that we have rescheduled it for May of 2022.
Albany, NY 12210 And the 63rd Annual Conference was going to be the highlight of the year, and we
518-432-4046 were especially looking forward to gathering in person for the first time in two years.

Editor-in-Chief & over this difficult decision. Save the dates for January 19th and 20th and then the
Managing Director following week on January 27th & 28th. As was done in the previous year we are
Amber Carpenter spreading it out over four days in a two-week time period. Know that you will have

As a member organization, NYSAPLS relies on the active participation of our
Administrative Assistant membership to truly be the voice throughout the state. With that said, we have a few
Sharon O'Brien
sharon@nysapls.org regionals that are not pulling their weight right now and we need to revive them so
that our members are being represented at the Board of Directors meetings and give
the members an opportunity to be involved with what is going on. Your involvement
Affiliated Associations is truly needed.
