everyone how it follows you around, and then used Pix4D to
make “point clouds” of the room. I benefitted from being able
to relate what we do to an active construction project right in
my town where new sewers are being built. I think I grabbed the
attention of about 5 kids who seemed truly fascinated by what
we do and the cool tech we use to do it. Mission accomplished!
The key to “Getting Kids into Surveying” is to grab their
attention when they are in middle school. Or just getting into
high school. By the time they enter college, they probably have
some sort of a plan for their future, or so they think. But if they
know about the profession before college, perhaps they will seek
out an Alfred State or a Ranger School and pursue a profession
in land surveying. Perhaps they will enter the military seeking
out the skills they can utilize in this profession when they are
discharged. College career fairs should not be ignored, but there
are many avenues to “Getting Kids into Surveying”. For example,
the Boy Scouts of America offer a surveyor’s merit badge. If you
are able, reach out to the local troop and see if they’d be interested
in helping scouts achieve that badge. Tell the math teachers and
science teachers that you may be friends with to relate what they
teach to the profession. My teachers said, “you’ll need to use this
one day”. How? How will “If P, then Q” help me one day? Talk
to your regional chapters; form a committee that can help attend
career days, job fairs, any event that may draw people to us.
Pay it forward.
Client Focused. Solution Oriented.
