Most of Indonesia lies between 5° N and 10° S latitude, and re- ceives rain throughout the year, making it part of the tropical rain forest climate region. The Maluku Islands of eastern Indonesia, seen here with the volcanic island of Ternate in the distance, once were the world’s largest producer of cloves. In 2011, Ternate’s Mount Gamalama erupted, closing the airport and causing thousands of residents to evacuate, but caused no fatalities. [Fadil/Corbis.]
