rope is a single thing
rope is a single thing,
made of separate strings bound together,
each made stronger for one purpose:
a slip knot, a square knot, a careless knot,
but still a knot that binds and confines
and cannot be undone while there is tension.
rope can be cut, abandoned,
disgraced by unfairly cruel
strains placed on it,
let to wither, in the weather,
burned by the sun.
but love is knot,
and the purpose it served endures
even when the rope’s undone.
