Pantaloon
my grandfather Youssef Hindi
owned a thoroughbred horse
named Pantaloon
who always won the race,
a poor man’s gift.

when I was four he took me
to the Alexandria racetrack
to watch Pantaloon run.
I was the only child
in the stands.
colorful jockeys all
anxious to win the race
guiding their excited steeds
to the gates then
the gun shot out
a sharp report and
all the horses
sprang to action.
