Claus Carstensen: T.O.C., 2007. Acrylic on canvas, 100 x 80 cm
Claus Carstensen works in several different media but is best known for his paintings. T.O.C. stands for Truth or Consequence, and the painting consists of a two-part picture surface, where
the left side depicts a black outline of a piece of rope on a dark background, while the right side bears the words Truth or Consequence on a yellow and gray background. Truth or Consequence may create associations with children’s games, but in the company of the rope, a darker and more serious meaning can relate to the words, which remain open in their statement. Claus Carstensen’s importance for Danish painting is great. He took part in the Young Wild movement in the 1980s, which sought to revitalize and reinvent painting. His works are typically kept in an expressionistic style that borders on abstraction but often contains figurative elements as well. Claus Carstensen works with a wide range of media and thus also creates sculptures, drawings, and collages. He also has a literary practice, and he has published both poetry and essay collections. Finally, it is also an extension of his artistry to curate exhibitions with other artists’ works
Asger Harbou Gjerdevik (1957 DK) studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he also later worked
as a professor. He has, among other things, exhibited his works at the The National Gallery of Art, DK; ARoS, DK; Esbjerg Art Museum, DK; Randers Art Museum DK; and Arken Museum for Contemporary Art, DK. Claus Carstensen’s works are part of the collections at several museum institutions, including Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, ARoS, The National Gallery of Art, Art Museum Liechtenstein, and Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum in Austria. Claus Carstensen has created several works for the public space, and in 2004 he received the Eckersberg Medal.
