Hans Øllgaard: Untitled, 1939. Oil on canvas, 75.5 x 65.5 cm
Hans Øllgaard was active in some of the most important artist associations on the 20th century Danish art scene. Together with Ejler Bille, Vilhelm Bjerke Petersen, Richard Mortensen, and
Sonja Ferlov Mancoba, among others, he exhibited in the artist group Linien, which was founded
in 1934 and particularly revolved around abstract painting. Together with them, he organized major international exhibitions. In 1940, he became a member of the Høst Exhibition, and in 1950 he became a member of the artists’ association Den Frie. The painting Untitled is emblematic of the period in which it was created. Here, the abstraction is complete in surfaces and lines of strong colors and a dynamic energy, and although there is a spatiality in the motif, it is also freed from figuration. Hans Øllgaard’s abstract period did not last long, and already in the 1940s he began to paint with a naturalistic style, where he orientated himself towards motifs from Bornholm
Hans Øllgaard (1911-1969, DK) was a private pupil of Aksel Jørgensen before he entered the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1933. Hans Øllgaard exhibited together with Linien, Corner, Høst and Den Frie, and he is represented in the collection at the National Gallery of Art.
