James Jessop: Subway Art, 2006. Oil on canvas, 171 x 250 cm
James Jessop has a special place on the international art scene. He is partly trained as a classical visual artist from the Royal College of Art in London and has partly been shaped by the American and English graffiti scene, where for many years he has worked with the tag Tek33 and enjoyed
great respect from his peers. James Jessop’s work with graffiti is inseparable from his work as a visual artist. In his paintings, which consist of oil on canvas, you can see how the graffiti aesthetic runs like a visual thread, and the many references to street art and its underground environments shine strongly through. The artist had his big breakthrough when in 2004 he was part of the ground- breaking exhibition New Blood at the Saatchi Gallery in London, where he, among many other, exhibited with Tal R, Daniel Richter, and Jonathan Meese. James Jessop is known for including graffiti-like elements in his paintings, but also art historical references and references to other forms of visual popular culture, including films and especially the B-movie category. His way of combining all kinds of images gives his works a distinctive expression and introduces genres that are not always recognized for their artistic quality.
James Jessop (1974 UK) studied at the Royal College of Art in London. He has exhibited his works at Sartorial Contemporary Art, UK; Saatchi Gallery, UK; Gallery Tom Christoffersen, DK and Carnegie Gallery, AU, among many other places. He is represented in the Saatchi Collection.
