Lars Nørgaard: Oktober, 2002. Oil on canvas, 59 x 50 cm.
With his expressive and abstract paintings, Lars Nørgaard played a very important role on the Danish art scene in the 1980s. He was part of the expressionist painting group The Young Wild
and a member of the artist community Værkstedet Værst, which aimed to create new, experimental directions in art. Lars Nørgaard has been painting for several decades, and thus, there is a diversity in his artistic oeuvre that at once remains recognizable and yet undergoes a development, especially from the figurative towards the abstract and with a destination at the totally non-figurative. The work Untitled belongs to the abstract field, where a jumble of colors, shapes and brushstrokes form the image and leave a well-balanced and chaotic expression that still contains a bit of figuration. A black outline gives the painting a drawn quality, which also sends associations to the cartoon aesthetic and emphasizes the work’s graphic means.
Lars Nørgaard (1956 DK) studied at the School of Applied Arts and Design in Copenhagen (1975-78) and the Academy of Art College in San Francisco (1980-81). He was part of The Young Wild in the 1980s and a member of Værkstedet Værst from 1982-84. Lars Nørgaard’s works are part of the collections of virtually all Danish art museums.
