Grandma Goldie’s
Famous Bread
5 lbs. flour
2 pkgs dry yeast
2 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp salt
½ cup shortening
1.5 quarts of warm water
Mix all together and knead until dough is elastic and when you poke a finger in it, the
dough comes back up. Cover and let rise until doubled in size. Work down and let it rise
again until doubled. Put into 4-5 greased bread pans, let rise again. Bake at 375 for 30-
35 minutes. Brush tops with butter when done.
“Grandma used to spend a lot of time at her Aunt Mattie’s taking care of her when she had the
‘grunts’ as her father used to call it. She would make the bread dough and then take a basin of
water to Mattie and wash her hands. Then she would bring the dough to her so Mattie could
feel if it was soft enough. Aunt Mattie always told her to knead it some more. I guess it is true
that practice makes perfect, because we all know that Grandma Clever’s bread was perfection,
especially when she served it with a hot steaming bowl of her vegetable soup.”
