own life aged 28 in 1997. The Trust goes into schools, universities and the workplace with trainers to help young people stay mentally well and spot the signs of being unwell. Dick Moore, one of the trainers, visited Oundle about four years ago. Mark was pleased to see in the 2017 Old Oundelian the prominence given to pastoral care and the way its importance is appreciated at Oundle from the Head downwards. The Trust also helps to train GPs and co-founded a chair at Reading University in Evidence-Based Therapies to try and get more counsellors trained, so that the waiting times for help can be reduced. That chair is now known as the Charlie Waller Institute. There is more information on the CWMT website and on the CTI website https://www.cwmt.org.uk and https://www.reading.ac.uk/charliewaller/ cwi-home.aspx .
Mark sees Pat Gardner (Sc 47), who helps a great deal with fund-raising events for CWMT. He got an MC at Suez in 1956, but ended up as a teacher at Elstree School, teaching his sons. He also sees George Jones (C 57), who was Head of School, captain of rugby and swimming, and a trumpeter. He is not very fit physically, but is sharp as ever. He also sees Peter Brass (D 58), who is retired and lives in Moulsford. Richard Phillips (D 59) was a good friend at the School, but they see little of each other now. He runs music festivals from his house in Warwick.
David Long (B 78) has finally escaped to the country (Blewbury in Oxon), taking early retirement after a 36-year career with BT. He would welcome any old friends wanting to get back in touch.
Mark Dyson (N 88) is still happily living in Sunningdale with his wife, three kids, two cats and a dog. He is still running regularly (to keep flab at bay rather than racing!) and still commuting to London to an oil and gas consultancy. He regularly sees brother Rupert Dyson (N 91), David Lyon (Lx 88), Julian Hart (D 87) and their families at weekends. They have the occasional cheeky beer in London.
David bumped into Mike Pringle (C 75) and Malcolm Harrison (Lx 78) at a procurement event. He was really excited to see that Malcolm has taken
Hugh Brass (D 67) and Peter Brass (D 58) in the Oundle Society’s marquee at the Henley Regatta in July
the reins at CIPS and was reminiscing about days communicating with Robin Veit.
David’s brother, Matt Lyon (Lx 97), and his wife have just had their first baby (James), and they are enjoying Hong Kong.
Martin Amor (D 89) enjoyed spending time this year with ‘Duff’ Battye, Dan Hiscocks and Simon Burdess. In his other news, he reports that he and his wife, Jaime, are enjoying building Cosmic Kids, their business which makes yoga and mindfulness fun for kids. Their YouTube channel passed 50 million
views this year!
Alex Jones (N 05) got married in
June and is now Alex Smith. She has recently moved back from Australia and is due to start paediatric intensive care training at King’s College London in September.
As for me, I stepped down from the School Governing Body at the end of July after 11 years. I have moved into a house that I built next door to our old family home. My daughter, Rebecca Miller (K 09), left PwC and joined Sainsbury’s earlier this year after taking a long holiday in Australia. My son, Tom Miller (Ldr 07), also changed jobs, moved house and got married in June. There were some 16 OOs at the wedding, including Charlie Harbage (G 07), Matthew Thomas (Ldr 07), Nick Mettyear (Ldr 07), Sam Cooper (St A 07), Tom Maizels (Sc 07), Harry Moule (B 07), Ralph Baines (Sc 75), Chris Baines (Sc 09), Jerry Miller (Sc 78), Alice Miller (Sn 08), Ellie Miller (Sn 14), Issy Miller (Sn 17) and Nick Kirkbride (G 77). I see Nick regularly and attended the wedding of his elder daughter, Charlie Kirkbride (Sn 05), in the summer where her sister, Livvie Kirkbride (Sn 09), was a bridesmaid. I also watched the third day of the India Test at Lord’s with Ian Lane (Ldr 77), Richard Ellis (Sn 86) and Bob Harrap (B 68). This year we managed to watch twice as much cricket before being interrupted by lunch!
