Four OOs who live in the same Berkshire village, Wargrave, at an Oktoberfest BBQ in June (l to r): Richard ‘JJ’ Harris (Lx 91), Henry Bryers (Lx 96), Alex Deacon (Lx 90) and Matt Perowne (Ldr 01)
of Henley Royal Regatta. Here he found his good friend, Chris Lloyd (B 59), and his wife, Debbie, who live near Cambridge. They rowed in the 1959 Oundle crew who reached the final of The Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup. For the last two years they have been joined by Michael Hamilton (G 59), who was cox and has lived in the USA more or less ever since 1959. 2019 will be the 60th anniversary of their feat at Henley and they intend to draw in Geoff Bremner (B 59), who was bow in the crew, to celebrate. Oundle reached the final three times in that period and Richard feels sure this was due to the huge input of the rowing master, George Huse, who trained the 1st VIII crews at this time and was Housemaster of Grafton. He was a Quaker and an excellent Chemistry teacher.
Matt Perowne (Ldr 01) lives in Wargrave, where they had an Oktoberfest which he attended with three OO neighbours – Richard Harris (Lx 91), Henry Bryers (Lx 96) and Alex Deacon (Lx 90). For the second year running, Henry went up to Oundle with other Lx 96 leavers to watch the 1st XV play Uppingham.
Matt Woods (St A 97) has been living in Haiti for the last two years, being one of the last British diplomats to be loaned to the EU. He saw Andrew Coulthurst (St A 97), who is still sailing yachts, a few months ago.
Jonathan Dowd (LS 90) is still on the ACSC staff at the Defence Academy, where he sees Matt Jackson (Lx 90).
Richard Valentine (D 62) has had another year of yet more golf and travel. He sees Peter Sechiari (D 62), Charles Pollard (Sc 63), Richard Glover (Sc 62) and his son, Jock Glover (Sc 91), and Mike Piers-Hall (D 62), plus brother Charles Valentine (D 54), Neil Shepherd-Smith (D 54) and sons Neil Valentine (G 92) and Stuart Valentine (G 99), all of whom are in good form.
Sir Mark Waller (D 58) retired as a Lord Justice of Appeal in 2010. He was then Intelligence Services Commissioner for six years, retiring at the end of 2016, and also acts as an arbitrator. He is also Chairman of the Charlie Waller Memorial Trust, set up in memory of his eldest son, who took his
went with Lance to Wales v England rugby match, but was unable to remember the result!
Tim Hainsworth (S 58) met up with Philip Hall (S 58), Kenneth Moore (S 58), Edward Hunt (S 58) and John Craggs (S 61) at the Over 60s’ Lunch. Any others would be welcome next year for a reunion.
Tony Riley (Ldr 47) is approaching his 90th year and has moved to Witney to be close to his daughter. He would love to meet up with any contemporaries in the same area.
Peter Sutcliffe (N 54) is still at his cottage in Cape Town during the winter. After getting his knees fixed, he is going to compete in the Argus cycle race next March. He occasionally sees Julian Ghosh (C 67) at vintage and historic car meetings in the UK.
Cypher16, featuring Jack Doolan (C 07) and Will Cass (Sc 07), are recording their second album in Gothenburg, Sweden. The band's debut album, The Great Surveyor, was released at the end of 2015, with Cypher16 filming a video at the Natural History Museum in London and playing shows around the world in support of it. The band are working with producer Jakob Herrmann and Jacob Hansen in Sweden and Denmark respectively, with the final product being released at the end of 2018/early 2019. A first single will be released at the end of the summer. More info at
www.cypher16.net.
Simon Nicholson (Lx 61) has
recovered well from triple bypass surgery last year and hopes for a knee renewal this autumn. He can still fish, though, and landed a 23lb salmon from the Tyne last October. He occasionally sees Roderick Ashby (Lx 60).
Aidan Nicholson (Lx 96) continues to manage funds adroitly and takes his family of five on exotic Caribbean holidays. Sadly, he missed the latest annual Lx 96 reunion, this time celebrating adulthood at last (all reaching the 40-years-old milestone)! He keeps in touch with Charles Ashby (Lx 96), Alex Stanhope (Lx 96) and Max Barraclough (Lx 96). Charles used the visit of Martin Smith (Lx 96) from New Zealand in June to meet up with Tom Johnson (Lx 96) and Abbie Johnson (W 96).
David Nicholson (Lx 99) has bought a house in Chorleywood three miles from his father, which is great for now, but perhaps a bit close for comfort, given that he and new wife Gez are expecting a daughter in mid-January. He keeps in touch with Max Desoutter (Lx 99), Will Dean (Sn 99), Nick Atkins (C 99), James Morton- Haworth (C 99) and Andrew Worrall (S 99).
Richard Bailey’s (Sc 60) regular contact with OOs each year is meeting at the Oundle tent on the Wednesday
