players, having just attained 70. Never too young!
Seb Falk (B 99) is still living in Cambridge and now working at Girton College, Cambridge, having finished his PhD in 2016. His first book, an introduction to medieval science and the monks who made it, will be published by Penguin in 2020. His second son, Oisín, was born last October, joining Amos, who is now 31⁄2. Seb’s sister, Bella Falk (K 97), is still working in TV and living in London. Her blog, PassportAndPixels.com, recently won Best Photography at the UK Blog Awards.
Peter Pugh (G 62) continues to write
books and run his publishing company, Icon Books, which is still growing and will publish 90 new titles this year. He keeps in touch with a number of OOs, especially Anthony ‘Scatty’ King (G 60). Peter and his wife, Felicity, recently went to Berlin for five days with ‘Scatty’ and his wife, Di. Peter’s sons, Alex Pugh (B 89) and Oliver ‘Ginger’ Pugh (B 93), were also at Oundle and they are both happily married and prospering in business.
On separate occasions recently, Tim Apthorpe (S 56) and Antony Jarrold (Ldr 55) each entertained around 100 guests over lunch (more like a banquet) in the 800-year-old Langley
Abbey. Both occasions marked their eight decades and for Tim, who heads up a lively investment club in Norwich, it was a celebration of five family milestones, principally his and his wife Jill’s golden wedding anniversary this year. Antony still enjoys his music, playing the organ at various churches in Norfolk. The lunches were attended by family who had flown from several continents, including Philly Brock (K 92) from Hong Kong and Andrew Apthorpe (S 93) from New York. Philly and Andrew are in finance. Charles Jarrold (G 83) is CEO of the British Printing Industries Federation.
I was pleased to be asked if I would take on the role as East Midlands Corresponding Member, as it meant reconnecting with those OOs I met during my 17 years as Secretary of the OO Club. Although I was given the honour of becoming a Life Vice- President of the Club, that did not necessarily mean I would have contact with many of you, so it has been interesting and informative to receive your news (although I would have liked more!).
However, there are sad circumstances to my new role – my predecessor, Richard Potter (Lx 54), sadly died earlier this year. Richard had done the job for many years and was a great help to me when I was preparing the magazine. He was a valuable member of the OO Committee and will be much missed. Sincere condolences to his wife, Marilyn, and the rest of his family.
Tim Chell (G 80) sent me his news and that of his father, Keith Chell (G 51). Tim got married to Catherine Jeffrey on 25th May. They live in Rutland and are kept busy by their educational supplies business. When they are not working, they enjoy travelling, walking with their dog and sailing their boat on the North Norfolk coast. Keith continues to live in East Leicestershire with his wife, Pam. He is
still playing golf and is cramming in as much overseas travel as he possibly
can prior to his 85th birthday, by which time he is concerned he will no longer be able to find anyone prepared to offer him travel insurance for such far- flung destinations! Recent trips have been to the Greek Islands, Sri Lanka and Sweden.
Tim also tells me he is in touch with
Mark Furber (C 80), Philip Parkinson (Lx 68) and James Greenlees (Lx 87). They are all members of a handicap doubles group at Leicester Squash Club. Some are playing singles, but he says that doubles squash and racketball seem to be the games of choice these days!
John Boon (L 01) is a solicitor at Roythornes in Spalding and lives in Stamford. He celebrated his second wedding anniversary with his wife, Abbie, on 1st May and they have a baby, Zachary John, born in October 2017. I expect by now they are getting more sleep, as Zachary will be nearly a year old by the time this magazine is published!
Tim Pollard (Sc 93) reports that he continues to bump into current and past Oundelians in his MAMIL and sporting endeavours, playing cricket and hockey in the Midlands. He has even managed to play on the 1st X1 cricket square – a feat he never managed while at the School! He and Andy Rymer (G 91) organise a parents’
