diamonds, a club and a heart). So we must assume it is with East and play
a club early.
When we do that what we do next will depend on what happens. So, we
lead the club and stop and Manage again.
1. West takes the Ace. Now after they win their diamonds we can
regain the lead, draw their trumps and go to dummy and discard 2
hearts on the King and Queen of Clubs.
2. West does not take the ÊA. We now have not got club loser now,
but, if we draw the opponent’s trumps we have 2 heart losers. So
we must ruff a heart in dummy. Let us consider just how to do
that.
a. We play Ace, King and another heart. West wins the third
heart and plays a fourth. East ruffs this with the 9 and the
spade Jack is promoted. No good.
b. We draw two rounds of trumps with the Queen and Ace
and now play Ace, King and another heart. West wins and
plays a third trump. No good.
c. Ah, suppose we lead a low heart from each hand. Now
they cash their diamonds and give us the lead back. We
now play 2 rounds of trumps with the Queen and Ace and
now play the heart Ace and King and ruff a heart. That’s it.
