Week 10 hand analysis

            So, these hands are about finessing. Remember that when you take a
        finesse you might lose the lead and so it is essential that all gates are
        guarded so that you can get back in again.

        Hand 1


        An easy hand to bid. East opens a weak

        notrump and West announces, “12-14".                   Ì  9 7 3
            With 16 points West knows that game                Ë  K 8 6 3
        should be on and bids it directly.                     Ê 9 2

            The lead should be ÌK.

            In notrump we make C. A. M. P.

        Count your top tricks by power. 2 spades, 1           Í  10 7
        heart, 1 diamond and 4 clubs. Total 8.          6      Ì  K Q J 10 2
        Add tricks from other sources. Slow tricks  16    12     Ë  10 4 2

        by power - 1 in diamonds. However, if

        North holds the ËK we can finesse using    -      1NT
        tricks by position and make 1 or 2 extra   3NT    All pass
        diamonds.
        Manage the hand. The danger to this hand is that South gets in to run the
        long hearts. If South holds the ËK we cannot keep him out so there is no
        need to duck the opening lead. So win and cash the ÊQ and then the Ace
        and King and play a diamond to the Jack.  When this wins we go to table
        with our last club and repeat the finesse.
        Play.  Go to table in clubs, finesse the diamond twice and make 10 tricks

            The hand is over the page.
            East is too strong to open 1NT and opens the longest suit and rebids
        1NT which is where he plays.
