Sandra Al Tamimi , MD was born in Dallas Texas but was raised in
Toronto Canada. She was raised by immigrant parents and is fluent in
Arabic, French and English. After obtaining her Honors bachelor’s degree
in the Sciences from the University of Toronto, she went on to start her
medical journey as a first-generation physician at the American University
of the Caribbean School of Medicine (AUC). While at AUC, she was
awarded the Empower Scholarship for her academic achievements. In
addition to that, she was on the dean’s list. She was also involved in
various leadership roles while in Basic Sciences, including Historian of the Student Government
and Co-treasurer of the Canadian Medical Student Association.
Sandra endured and displayed her resilient character by pivoting and adapting to the sudden
changes of her life after Hurricane Irma. She completed her 5th semester in Preston, UK. She
then went on to have her clinical rotations in Miami, Florida at Jackson Memorial Hospital System
as well as the University of Miami Hospital. While there, she immersed herself in the city,
population and culture and taught herself basic Spanish. Upon graduating in the height of the
COVID pandemic in 2020, she went on to complete her pediatric residency training at Johns
Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg Florida where she fell in love with medical
education and pediatric emergency medicine. Her love for pediatric emergency medicine was
quite evident as she was presented the pediatric emergency medicine award during her residency
graduation.
Dr. Al Tamimi then went on to start her Fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at the Johns
Hopkins University in Baltimore Maryland and is about to begin her second year of fellowship. She
is currently in the process of applying for her master’s degree in medical education to continue to
combine her two passions of Medical Education and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. During her
time in training, Dr. Al Tamimi continued to be involved with the AUC Alumni Committee and at-
tended various Meet and Greets for prospective students which she enjoys participating in.
Outside of work, Dr. Al Tamimi enjoys traveling and has been to over 25 countries. She also
enjoys reading and even started a book club in her training programs! Dr. Al Tamimi is described
by friends and colleagues as a happy, optimistic and humble person
who worked hard to obtain her goals.
