2.4. Solving an Equation For a Specific Variable
An equation for a specific variable gives the relation between two or more variables. For example, 3x – p = kx – q
Similarly, a linear equation in two variables is given by:
ax + by = c, where x and y are real numbers. a and b are non-zero.
For example, 4x + 3y = 5
Worked Example
Find the value of x in terms of y for the following equation.
5x + 3y = 14
Solution:
Express x in terms of y
5x + 3y = 14
5x = 14 – 3y
Isolate x on one side
Using the properties of equality. x = 14−3𝑦
