                                                      Brendan McDonough

Brendan McDonough is a former wildland firefighter, speak-
er, author, and mental health advocate. His journey from
personal adversity to firefighting, mental health advocacy,
and public speaking has inspired thousands across the na-
                                               tion.

Before joining the Granite Mountain Hotshots, McDonough
faced significant personal challenges, including battling addiction. With a daughter on the way,
he made the courageous decision to turn his life around, earning a position with the Granite
        Mountain Hotshots Prescott, Arizona.

On June 30, 2013, while serving as a lookout for the Hotshots, a sudden and deadly shift in
fire conditions led to the tragic deaths of his 19 brothers. As the lone survivor, McDonough
struggled with survivor’s guilt, PTSD, and addiction. He later channeled his pain into advocacy
for mental health, first responders, and those battling addiction.

In 2016, he authored Granite Mountain: The Firsthand Account of a Tragic Wildfire, Its Lone
Survivor, and the Firefighters Who Made the Ultimate Sacrifice, offering an intimate look into
his experiences. His story also served as the basis for the 2017 film Only the Brave, in which
he was portrayed by actor Miles Teller.

McDonough went on to co-found Holdfast Recovery, a state-licensed and Joint Commission
Accredited treatment center dedicated to helping individuals overcome substance abuse and
        mental health struggles.

Further embracing his calling to serve, McDonough has returned to the fire service as a full
time structural firefighter in December 2024, returning to the frontlines of fire service with a
renewed passion for protecting lives and supporting his fellow firefighters.

As a sought-after speaker, McDonough shares his powerful testimony of resilience, redemp-
tion, and recovery. His message resonates with diverse audiences, from corporate teams and
first responders to faith-based organizations, reinforcing the importance of perseverance,
faith, and mental health awareness in overcoming life’s greatest challenges.
