the binder. Ziva’s face softened, and their voice became quieter. Under the table, Stelara reassuringly gripped their hand.
“I... I think I was born in the wrong body. I hate the way dresses look on me, and they’re so uncomfortable. I’ve tried wearing men’s clothes, and it feels right. My body feels like it’s actually mine, not some impostor.”
Ziva pinched his eyes shut, not ready to see Madam Cohen’s reaction.
She’s probably disgusted with me, right? She seemed so against us marrying each other, but saying I’m actually a man? That’s a lot all at once.
“I was taught that people were born in their bodies and it was theirs. Perfectly designed for their soul to go in. Anything but a man and a woman falling in love was unnatural. That’s why it’s illegal for women to love women and men to love men.”
Feeling something cold on his neck, Ziva’s eyes flew open. Madam Cohen was reaching across the table and putting Ziva’s necklace on him. With a gentle smile and hints of confusion, she continued speaking.
“Are you happy?”
Ziva nodded, squeezing Stelara’s hand.
