INTRODUCTION

When we founded Gallery 19C in 2016, our objective was to present a more comprehensive understanding of 19th century
European art, and to create a narrative that told the stories of artists—important artists—who have been long overlooked
and often forgotten. Paris was the center of the cultural and creative landscape at this time, and we will always celebrate
the extraordinary artists and events that changed the trajectory of art history. However, one of our goals has been to show
that so much more was happening, and not just in France but all over Europe. In this spirit, we are very excited about our
next project. So, to quote John Cleese and Monty Python’s Flying Circus, “and now for something completely different.”

For our new exhibition, Gallery 19C is delighted to focus on the most significant artistic movement to come out of
Germany in the 19th century—the Nazarenes. They were avant-garde, they were popular, and their influence was
far-reaching. Today, not as well-known as the English Pre-Raphaelites but arguably just as rebellious and dedicated to
their cause, the Nazarenes were the first anti-academic, anti-establishment movement in 19th century European art.
Our ability to organize an exhibition on the Nazarenes is twofold. The paintings in our show come from a passionate
American collector, who discovered German 19th century painting over twenty-five years ago and set about to assemble
a comprehensive selection of the very best and most interesting examples. And, who better to tell the story of the
Nazarenes then Dr. Cordula Grewe, the leading authority and author of the book, The Nazarenes—Romantic Avant-Garde
and the Art of the Concept. We are beyond grateful to Cordula for agreeing to write our catalogue.

We hope you will enjoy learning about Johann Friedrich Overbeck, Wilhelm Schadow, Joseph Führich and many others as
you read the pages that follow in discovering yet another chapter in the spectacular 19th century.
