UGL 3.0: THE UNDERGRADUATE LEARNING COMMONS

Programming of space and understanding the students needs are two ways these projects
        influenced my design solution.

The parti shown takes the site, with site setbacks taken into account, and puts a “Hy-
phen” (30’ wide pathway) between Founders Library and UGL 3.0. This design move
breaks apart the two buildings so that UGL 3.0 can explore different ideas about
what a 21st century library should be on Howard’s campus. With this distinction
made between the “old” and the “new”, the “Hyphen” space can then bring together
the two buildings again. In addition, in the greater context of the main campus, the
“hyphen” pathway provides a new, prominent, direct connection from The Yard to

This project is essentially a demolishing of the existing Undergraduate Library,
