It was a case of mistaken identity. Explorers confused them for ravenous cats, rats and weasels. But they were something completely unknown...a curious band of marsupials with a taste for blood, bone and meat. Scores of different predators with pouches live all across Australia. The lives of many are at risk. Introducing the numbat, the northern quoll, the dibbler – strange names, strange animals – and the strangers who want to keep them safe.
Barbary macaques are up to mischief in Gibraltar, pickpocketing unwary tourists. Their relatives, the Japanese macaques, are much more laid back. On Ellesmere Island, the wolves there have found a lost phone, now they’re playing football with it. They make us wonder. Especially when they turn up in unexpected places. Like little droll penguins that toddle over the sandy beaches of South Africa. Shouldn’t they be somewhere a little, well, cooler?

This is the story of Mike deGruy, an irrepressibly curious and enthusiastic underwater filmmaker who died suddenly in 2012. DeGruy filmed the oceans for more than three decades becoming as famous for his on camera storytelling as his glorious, intimate visions of the sea and the creatures who live in it. Inspired to share his legacy as a filmmaker and storyteller, and to spread his mission for protecting the ocean, his wife and filmmaking partner Mimi deGruy returned to the edit room. The film depicts Mike going from an artist sharing the wonder of the deep to an enraged and impassioned warrior. ‘Diving Deep: The Life and Times of Mike deGruy’, celebrates Mike and all he accomplished in his amazing career, highlighting what he cared most about at the time of his death: we are destroying the ocean before we even know what’s there.
