For the assignment/essay we are going to look at the differences between a for-profit sports
organization and a non-profit sports organization. To start off we need to identify the definitions of a
for-profit sports organization and a non-profit sports organization. The definition of a for-profit
sports organization is as follows. A for-profit organization is one whose main goal is to make money
(a profit). A for-profit organization exists primarily to generate a profit, to generate/make more
money than it spends at the end of the year. The owner decides on when and what to spend the
profits on. Owners might even keep it for themselves, re-invest in the business (Future
development/expansions) or pay employees’ salaries and other expenses. (News, 2021)

The definition for a Non-profit organisation also known as a NPO is as follows. A non-profit
organisation, as the name suggest is a legal organisation whose primary purpose is to promote
public good rather than making profit. These are founded by a group of people who come together
for a common purpose to improve the Public, Community or individual people in society. Non-profit
organizations are often used for trusts, cooperatives, advocacy, charities, environmental and
religious groups. Non-profit organisations also make the profit, but the profit earned by it is used for
furthering the aim of the concern. They raise funds from subscriptions, donation, government grant,
membership fee, entrance fee, legacies, and charity and so on.

When conducting research to compare the two types of sports organizations,
for the profit organization I chose West Coast Cricket Academy and for the
non-profit organization I chose the Gary Kirsten Foundation. Both
organizations are involved in cricket development for young kids and both are
located in Western Cape South Africa. The reason why I chose these two
organizations is to keep the comparisons fair.

For the next section of the essay we are going to be comparing the for-profit
sports organizational structure with the non-profit sports organizational
structure. To start off we are going to look at West Coast Cricket Academy’s
structure. The business operational structure is as follows below:
                                                         Owner/Head
                                                           coach
                                                           (David
                                                         Sandmann)

                                             Assitant Head
                                                Coach
                                                (Corbin
                                                Costley)

                          Coach Coach
                                                Coach Coach
(Jon-Clive (Liam Hayes) (Luke Peters) (Dylan
                          Oliver) Johnson)

                                                                           Coach
                               Coach Coach Coach
                                                                           (Liam
(Kieran Stadler) (Luke Lefebure) (Chad Pheiffer)
                                                                         Maharage)
               (Academy, 2021)
