The new statue, The Moving Spirit of Love, is a life-sized bronze memorial honoring Charlotte Forten Grimké,
a pivotal figure in Salem’s history. Created by artist
Ai Qiu Hopen of Humanity Memorial Inc., the sculpture embodies Charlotte’s legacy of hope, justice, and equity, symbolizing the bright future she envisioned. Ai Qiu,
a Chinese immigrant artist with a deep commitment to inclusivity, designed the statue as a tribute to Charlotte’s role in the abolitionist movement and her work as a teacher and activist.
