LETTERS TO THE EDITOR:
1.
Many thanks to the planning committee and all involved in making this year’s Lincoln Day
Banquet a memorable occasion.
As a part of the Lincoln Day tradition, we recognize those members who have passed in the
preceding year, by reading each person’s name aloud, accompanied by projection of the list of
names of those departed members, displayed for all to see. In recent years, we have omitted
the reading of names aloud and instead simply project the names and commit to a moment
of silence. I would like to encourage the 2026 planning committee to have the moderator read
the names aloud during the moment of silence. This would likely be the last time that each
departed member’s name is spoken aloud before this gathered assembly. I know, this may
seem a small thing, but reading the names is very meaningful and poignant for those of us
who remember the persons and personalities associated with those names.
Thank you.

2.
I was surprised at the recent keynote speeches (2024 & 2025) about President Lincoln.
I would like to suggest that it may be time to change the name of the Lincoln Day Banquet.
It may be that President Lincoln’s legacy is too complex to permit unconditionally honoring
him each year.
One possibility for the keynote speakers would be for them
to speak about any person who has been instrumental in
the civil rights struggle or any person who used their legal
experience in some exceptional way.
Another possibility would be to change the name to
“President’s Day Banquet” and the keynote speaker could
talk about any of our presidents or any other topics.
