DAY 8 PETERMANN ISLAND & VERNADSKY

 FEB. 27, 2019 RESEARCH STATION

Heading Westward this morning, we needed
to get up very early at 5 AM so we can witness
the magnificent but narrow LeMarie Channel
as our ship went through it on its way to
Petermann Island, a small, low and round island
lying off the northwest coast of Kiev Peninsula
and a short distance south of the Lemaire
Channel. The ship has to go through what
look like a forest of icebergs to get us there.

Getting off the zodiac to this island was
very tricky. The rocks were uneven, slippery
and some were sharp, but we have now
developed more confidence as we get more
experience in walking and hiking on ice.
