Miss Germany apologizes to Pia
Wurtzbach after post-pageant tirade
AFTER granting a post-pageant
interview where she aired her
displeasure over the outcome of this
year’s Miss Universe pageant as a
result of the controversial mistake of
host Steve Harvey, the Miss Universe
Germany organization issued a
statement of apology on behalf of Miss
Germany Sarah-Lorraine Riek on their
Facebook page.
“Miss Universe Germany Sarah-
Lorraine feels sorry for her colleague
and friend Miss Colombia. This must
have been the worst nightmare.
She never intended to offend Miss
Philippines in any way. She feels sorry land in the Top 15 semifinals — said
for both girls. As well for Pia Miss
Philippines that she didn’t have her
real crowning moment,” went the first
part of the three paragraph statement
written in the third person.
“She is really sorry if the video
suggests anything else than that.

Philippines boosts pageant powerhouse
rep as Big 4 Performer of the Year
AS a result of its huge title wins
in Miss Universe and Miss Earth this
year, the Philippines is the 2015 Big
4 Performer of the Year as ranked by
pageant analysis site Missosology.org.
The “Big 4” refers to Miss Universe, Year and the third time since 2012,
Miss World, Miss International and Miss which further reinforces the country’s
Earth—the four major international
pageants for women considered as the
most publicized, most influential and
most important.
In addition to the victories of
Pia Wurztbach in Miss Universe and
Angelia Ong in Miss Earth, Janicel
Lubina and Hillarie Parungao also did
the country proud with their Top 10
finishes in Miss International and Miss Miss Grand International while Rogelie
World, respectively.
In winning the Big 4 Performer of
the Year, the Philippines accumulated

apology.
In the video of her post-pageant
interview that was posted on the
Facebook page of pageant analysis
site Missosology, Riek — who failed to
she was upset at the result and thought

Arévalo “deserved to win” because “no
one of us (the other contestants) voted
for Philippines.”
Riek’s remarks immediately elicited
angry comments from Filipino fans
of Pia which may have contributed to
Riek’s change of heart just hours after
650 points ahead of runner-up U.S.A.,
which garnered 450 points, and
Venezuela, which scored 430.
This is the fourth time the Philippines
has won the Big 4 Performer of the
reputation as a pageant powerhouse.
Aside from its sterling performances
in the Big 4 pageants, the Philippines has
also been stellar in other international
beauty contests. Ann Lorraine Colis won
Miss Globe, Christi Lynn McGarry finished
1st runner-up and won Multimedia
Award honors in Miss Intercontinental,
Parul Shah placed 3rd runner-up in
Catacutan finished in the Top 20 in Miss

Another factor that may have also
contributed to Riek’s rapid change of
heart was the possible belated realization, I found out afterwards that it was
that Pia is, in fact, “half-German.”

wishes Pia all the best for this year as
Miss Universe 2015,” the statement
concluded.
While Harvey may have messed
up the announcement of the Miss
Universe winner, the outcome was
never in doubt as far as the judges were
concerned.
In his recent podcast following
the pageant, celebrity blogger Perez
Hilton, one of the four judges in the
competition, revealed that all of them
voted unanimously for Pia.
‘Oi Attack’ festival keeps punk alive in PH,
gains support of foreign underground acts
AN international line-up of
alternative acts headlined this year’s
“Oi Attack,” one of the longest running
congregation dedicated to the punk
scene in the Philippines.
Founded by dyed-in-the-wool punk
fan Merck Alvarez, known to couch
potatoes as one of the hosts of TV5’s
“Jojo A. All The Way,” the annual punk
festival once again paraded punk acts
from over the world playing alongside
their Pinoy counterparts at Botong’s
Bistro at A Venue in Makati City.
Hosted by veteran radio jock
Ramon Zialcita a.k.a. The Doctor,
this year’s “Oi Attack” was headlined
by Canadian acoustic oi artist Jenny
Woo and also featured the bands
After-After-Party from Hong Kong,
Two Finger Salute from the United
Kingdom, and Oi Squad representing
both France and Hong Kong.
Born and raised in Alberta, Canada,
Woo has been playing with a number of
Canadian punk and oi! bands over the
last 10 years. But after being inspired
by acts that ranged from the group
Badlands to the legendary Johnny
project in 2008 where she developed a
solid following of her own.

panel, all four of us, voted for Miss
Philippines to be number one.”

UndergroundHK.com hailed Oi
Squad as “one of the very few local
punk bands that has the true street
punk spirit.”
“Their sound is not just limited to
raw, straight, head-on punk though.
(Guitarist) Pierre brings in some
really sick Ska-punk melodies, chords
and solos,” the site further noted in
its review of the band.

Alvarez said he and a friend started
“Oi Attack” in 2003 with the objective
of reviving the Oi sub-genre of punk
rock in the UK.
Despite the violence that punk
gigs are known for as a result of
usually overzealous fans that starts
when they slamdance to the music,
Alvarez has managed to instill some
discipline in the event over the years.
Eventually, he was able to bring in
foreign punk acts that he described
as “anti-racist.”
In addition to the scheduled
performers, The Bois Oi Sharp band
from Singapore as well as the Argies
The Antifa band from Argentina
also arrived to lend their support to
the event while old school and next
generation local punk bands were
also in solidarity with “Oi Attack.”
There’s also an element of social
consciousness in “Oi Attack” as
Cheshunt, Alvarez pointed out it is against
racism not only in the Philippines but
also in the rest of the world.
“That’s what ‘Oi Attack’ is all
about—to unite against racism on
a global scale,” Alvarez declared. n
