willingness to return part of the ill-

of the Marcoses’ hidden wealth in the
spirit of transparency, Malacañang said
on Wednesday.
Presidential spokesperson Ernesto
Abella issued the statement after the
group Campaign Against the Return
of the Marcoses to Malacanang
(CARMMA) said that Duterte played
the role of a spokesman or negotiator
for the Marcoses when he revealed
that the family expressed willingness to
return a part of heir ill-gotten wealth,
including a few gold bars.
“The remark of the Campaign
Against the Return of the Marcoses to
Malacanang - that President Duterte has
become the spokesman and negotiator
for the Marcoses - entirely misses the
point,” Abella said.
“PRRD disclosed [the latest
development on] the issue of the
Marcos wealth in his speech in the spirit
of transparency. The Chief Executive
has the best interests of the Filipinos in following Marcos’ ouster to recover this
mind, which is, how our people would
benefit from the recovery of the Marcos
wealth,” he added.
Marcoses are willing to “open
everything” and “probably return” the
wealth that can be found.

Duterte on Tuesday revealed that the
Marcoses wanted to return the ill-gotten
wealth to help the government with its
“deficit.”
The president quoted a Marcos
spokesperson as saying that the amount
to be returned would not be that much.
He also said that he would want
a former chief justice and two other
people to handle the return of the
hidden wealth.
During his two-decade rule
that started in 1965, late dictator
Ferdinand Marcos managed to
amass an estimated wealth of $5-to-
10 billion from government coffers.
His family is said to have stashed
the money away in secret local and
offshore accounts, or hidden them
through dummy foundations as well
as cronies.
The Philippine Commission on
Good Government was then created
ill-gotten wealth.
In 2016 alone, the agency was able
to recover P481.95 million of that
