Knot Know-How
with Sandy Moret, Islamorada, Florida
Sandy and wife Sue own and operate Florida Keys Outfitters in
Islamorada, for decades one of the most influential fly-fishing shops in
the Florida Keys. Sandy has won the Keys’ most prestigious fly-fishing
tournaments nine times, and he’s a catalyst in teaching the sport through
the Florida Keys Fly Fishing School, organized by his shop.
“There have been a plethora of knots through the years, and that has led
to a tremendous amount of confusion, and the development of specialty
knots for this and that. But when I first started fishing in salt water in the
Florida Keys and South Florida back in 1972, I got involved with Miami
and sport-fishing clubs, and kept up with the Salt Water Fly Rodders of
America, who maintained records until the IGFA (International Game Fish
Association) took over. I got involved in fishing some of the tournaments
in the Keys. I found I got lucky more often than not, and that was
encouraging.
