            Fiberglass Cast Tape Applic ation
Applying the fiberglass c ast tape cor rectly is essential for ensur ing a strong, durable, and comfor table or thopedic
shor t leg c ast. Here are the steps for effectively applying fiberglass c ast tape:
Typic all y, 3-inch or 4-inch f iberglass rolls are used for shor t leg c asts. Padding technique will
replic ated with f iberglass applic ation.

Prep are the First Roll: Open and submerge the f iberglass roll in room temperature water for 1]2
seconds (excessivel y wet tape c an we aken the c ast); Gentl y squeeze out excess water.

Appl y the First Layer: Begin wrapping distall y ne ar the toes, le aving the toes exposed; Maintain 50%
over lap, ensur ing unifor m coverage.

Mold/Cove Cast While Wrapping: Keep the foot in a neutral position L90 degrees) to prevent plantar
flexion defor mit y; Avoid excessive tension while wrapping to prevent pressure points. Use entire f irst
roll on ankle complex, as indic ated above.

Connect Ankle to Lower Leg: Appl y 2nd roll with an anchor tur n and connect ankle complex and
continue wrapping up to the upper third of the tibia, f inishing ne ar tibial tubercle; or as directed by
                  MD.DO; Appl y 2]3 layers for adequate suppor t.

Fold Stockinette Over the Cast Edges: Tur n b ack the excess stockinette over the p adding to cre ate
                  smooth, soft edges.

Final Fiberglass Layer: Appl y f inal layers of f iberglass to secure the folded stockinette and smooth the
                  c ast edges.

Mold and Contour the Cast: Use your hands to mold the c ast gentl y while it sets (approximatel y 5]7
minutes); Ensure the plantar arch mold, Achilles and tibial molds are applied.

Monitor Setting Time: The c ast will be full y hardened within 20]30 minutes, but weight-be ar ing (if
allowed ) should be delayed until full cure L‡24 hours).

Check for Proper Fit: Per for m a f inal neurovascular check: Capillar y ref ill; Sensation; Toe movement

Ask the p atient if they feel any tightness, discomfor t, or pressure spots.

Always have physician review/evaluate c ast pr ior to p atient dep ar ture from off ice

By following these steps, you c an effectively apply fiberglass c ast tape for an or thopedic shor t leg c ast, ensur ing
a strong, stable, and comfor table c ast that promotes he aling and p atient satisfaction.
