Chapter 10
Picking up the cat
In a suburb outside Copenhagen
The bus is making an awful lot of sound, the carriage is crackling, it could
indicate a lack of oil, even though it looks fairly new.
"When I get a hold of that cat, Mother, I promise not to bother you anymore,"
says Ann, while casting a glance over the desolate area the bus passes through, a
barren place between the two ghettos.
"I certainly hope so."
Lissi didn't answer, instead she wipes her hand over her jacket pocket to make
sure the package of cigarettes, the twenty Blue Kings, is still there. She’s been
doing the same movement over and over again.
"It looks very cute in the picture, Mom," Ann continues. "Don’t you think?"
“I've answered that question a hundred times now, yes. I've just heard so much
about cats bringing bad luck. I recall where I've read it, but I’m sure of it"
Lissi takes the cigarette pack out of his pocket and taps it lightly. Gently, a
cigarette slides into her hand. She strokes the cigarette pack lightly, it feels
smooth and factory-esque, and for a brief moment, it removes her sense of
unease, a turmoil inside her head, that she’s always been carrying, but has
through the years gotten worse, since mother's untimely death, as well as her
breakup with Kell.
"Lissi lacks foundation." That's what Lissi's mother had always said about her.
“You can press the button now,” says Lissi.
Ann gets up halfway into the seat, reaches over Lissi and presses the button that
gives off a eerie beep.
