six-strand plait
The six-strand plait shown here may have some simi-
larities to the six-strand braid. However, a brief study
shows them to have different structures, including,
for the plait, a very pleasing chevron on one side.
Here are two methods/patterns for you to try.
Method One
2 The same as for stage 1, under, over, under, over,
under. The last pass under can be easier if you
cinch up after the fourth strand only, pulling
down and holding the first four strands in your
right hand, and then twist the final fifth strand
to the right down over the passed strand (the
#1 strand) and hold it again with the right hand.
1 Take all six strands and lay them out evenly, then
take the outer right (or outer left) under one,
over one, under one, over one, under one to the
left and cinch up tightly.
3 repeat as needed, being sure to
pull tight after each pass.
Final stage: Even up tension on all the strands on both faces by
carefully taking each cord in turn and tugging until it sits fair.
The finished plait from the back, with a handsome long double slash.
