Dr. Newt Hasson
Team Doctor
In his 41st season, Dr. Newt Hasson has been the Westlake team doctor
since 1985. When the Chaps are playing whether home or on the road-
his goal is to always be on the sidelines. Newt was a scholarship football
player at Duke University and also captained the Blue Devils lacrosse
team, graduating in 1972 with a degree in physics. He remained at Duke
for medical school and then it was on to Stanford for his internship in
surgery and residency in orthopedic surgery. Following a fellowship in
sports medicine at the Hughston Orthopedic Clinic, Dr. Hasson and his
wife of 43 years, Pam, moved to Austin in 1983. They wanted to be where
football is king, and that meant Texas. They are proud parents of three
Westlake graduates - Lauren, Westlake’s valedictorian in 2000: Duke,
quarterback of the 2000 state finalists Westlake football team; and
Meredith, co-captain of the 2002 state champion volleyball team. Dr.
Hasson was the first team physician ever inducted into the Texas High
School Football Hall of Fame, he received the “Contribution to Amateur
Football” award from the National Football Foundation and most
recently was inducted into the Greater Austin Sports Foundation’s Hall
of Honor for outstanding contribution to youth sports in Austin.

completed his surgery internship and orthopedic surgery residency at
the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. He finished training
with a fellowship year in Sydney, Australia and moved to Austin in 1999.
He and his wife Stacy have been married 30 years and are proud of their
