CHAP BAND HISTORY CHAP BAND HISTORY
The Chaparral Band has earned countless awards for excellence in perfor-
mance during its 54 year history. In 2010 the band was chosen as one of only
two schools nationwide to receive the “Sudler Shield” from the John Philip
Sousa Foundation. This award, coupled with the “Sudler Flag of Honor” won
in 1999 makes the Chaparral Band one of only a handful of band programs
nationwide to have received both of these awards presented for continued
excellence and longevity in the fields of marching band, concert band and
individual achievement. In addition, in 2017, the Westlake program was
recognized by Phi Beta Mu International Band Fraternity as a “Program of
Distinction.”
The band has three times been named “Texas Honor Band” (state champion
for concert bands) and has consistently earned yearly UIL Sweepstakes
trophies for outstanding performances in marching, concert and sight-read-
ing competitions.
The Chaparral Band has competed in the State Marching Contest on many
different occasions. In 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014 they placed in the
top ten at this event and in 2021 the Chap Band finished 10th in the state.
The group has been named the Grand Champion of the Duncanville
Invitational in 2007 and has placed in the finals competition of Regional and
Super-Regional BOA marching contests. The Chaparral Band was featured
in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade in 2003, 2017, and 2024.
The Westlake Wind Ensemble has performed at the prestigious World As-
sociation of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles in Cincinnati in July of 2009
and will perform for a fourth time (1979, 2002, 2013, 2022) at the Midwest
Clinic in Chicago this December. In 2006 the Wind Ensemble performed
for the membership of the American Bandmasters Association at their
annual convention in Dallas. Each of the four concert ensembles have
performed (2005, 2009, 2013 and 2019) at the International Concert Band
Festival held in Carnegie Hall, New York, NY.
The 2025 Westlake Band and Elite Visual Ensemble boast a membership of
over 200 students. The dedication and musical abilities that serve as
a foundation for ‘Chap Pride’ indicate a promising and successful season.
