Brian credited Pro Brent for implementing the Golf Genius live scoring so
players could see their situation, but after a good start on Sunday’s back
nine, he decided to focus on hitting good shots.
“Just tried to birdie every hole,” he said.
But the back nine was a “little bit of a wild ride,” Brian said.
From 10-13 he went bogey, par, birdie, bogey before almost getting an ace
on 14 and tapping in a birdie. Then came No. 15. Brian was up against a
bush. He took some practice swings and in his first attempt at a real swing
with more power he damaged some of bush and then stopped.
The result was he improved his position and got a two-stroke penalty.
“A two-shot penalty late in the round is not the most comforting,” said
Brian, who emphasized the ruling by Pro Brent was absolutely the right
call.
“I took a deep breath after writing down a double on 15,” he said, before
finishing par, bogey, par to hold on and win.
He hit two shots into the wind on 18 to set up his two-putt par.
Brian grew up playing golf as a junior, at Incarnate Word Academy in
Corpus Christi before playing college golf two years at the University of
Texas at Arlington and two more years at St. Edward’s University in Austin.
