100 years ago, many families went on holiday to the seaside by steam train.

The beaches were very crowded with people. People wore special swimming

boots in the water but they didn’t wear sunglasses. Children played in the sand

and in the water. They liked watching puppet shows and going on donkey rides.

Many families had picnic baskets with sandwiches, fruit and lemonade in them

for lunch. Sometimes a cart came to the beach with ice cream for people to buy.
