                                                                       Dept. Of English

Haiku is a traditional style of Japanese poetry

in which seventeen syllables are written in

three lines, the first line made of five syllables,

second line seven syllables and the third line

five syllables. The subject is basically about

nature or season. However, for English

speakers, haiku is a popular style of poetry

that can be about anything. Most haiku do not

rhyme. yet there is nothing that prevents it

from rhyming, provided the rhyme fits the

purpose of the poem. Many people use haiku

as a form for creating funny, entertaining or

absurd poems. It also features intense

emotion. Though compact in size, a haiku

                                             delivers a message.
